Meet Jessica Evans
In celebration of National Mentor Month, we’re thrilled to highlight Jessica Evans, General Manager of Courtyard Collegeville, whose journey in hospitality demonstrates the transformative power of mentorship. Jessica’s career began in 2011 and has been shaped by her determination, passion, and the invaluable guidance she received along the way.
Your Journey in Hospitality
My career in the hospitality industry began in 2011 while I was a nursing student looking for part-time work. I walked into the Courtyard in Collegeville and inquired about open positions. I was hired on the spot as a Front Desk Agent, and to my surprise, I quickly discovered a deep passion for hospitality that shifted my career path entirely.
This realization led me to change my major and commit to a full-time role, where I was promoted to Supervisor and cross-trained in all departments within three years. These experiences prepared me for the next step in my journey as Assistant General Manager at a sister Courtyard property in Malvern, PA.
Recognizing that sales experience was crucial for a comprehensive understanding of hotel operations, I transitioned into a SMERF (Sales, Military, Religion, Family Segments) Sales Manager role and was later promoted to Director of Sales, a position I held for nearly four years. When Newport assumed management of our hotel in 2020, I was given the incredible opportunity to return to where my journey began—this time as General Manager.
Mentorship Reflections
Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to have many mentors who have shaped me into the leader I am today. Each mentor provided unique lessons and insights that I’ve blended with my own beliefs and leadership style.
One mentor who made a lasting impact on me is Adam Hill, then my General Manager during my time as Director of Sales. Adam’s knowledge, patience, and unwavering support inspired me to think creatively and grow both personally and professionally. He recognized my readiness to become a General Manager and advocated for me during Newport’s acquisition of our hotel. His mentorship was instrumental in setting me on my current path, and I will always be grateful for his belief in my potential.
Building a Strong Team
A great team is the heartbeat of any hotel. Building a supportive, growth-focused culture starts with hiring the right people who complement the existing team dynamic—never hiring out of desperation. Once the team is established, I focus on understanding everyone’s strengths and motivations, managing them in ways that align with their unique qualities.
I encourage open communication and live by an open-door policy, which helps build trust and ensures team members feel comfortable seeking help or sharing concerns. Creating opportunities for cross-department collaboration is also essential. For example, I prioritize activities like “a day in the life” experiences, where team members learn about other departments’ responsibilities. This fosters mutual respect and strengthens the bond between departments, creating a “one team” mentality.
Career Challenges and Growth
Starting my role as General Manager during the height of the pandemic in 2020 was a significant challenge. Staffing shortages meant covering shifts while managing day-to-day operations. I also made mistakes, such as hiring the wrong individuals just to fill positions.
Despite these challenges, this period shaped me into a stronger leader and problem solver. I learned the value of patience, kindness, and understanding, which have become cornerstones of my leadership style.
Balancing Leadership and Life
Maintaining work-life balance in hospitality is challenging, and I still work on it every day. As a General Manager, I’ve learned the importance of preparing my team to succeed independently, fostering trust and competence among staff. This not only benefits the team but also allows me to manage my time effectively.
Advice to Aspiring Leaders
My advice for aspiring General Managers is to master every department. Understanding the inner workings of each role—whether housekeeping, F&B, or sales—gives you the insight and empathy needed to lead effectively.
Never be afraid to ask questions or seek assistance. Leadership in hospitality is about balancing attention to detail with the big picture, empowering your team, and showing genuine care for the people who make success possible. And don’t forget to let your team see your human side—building trust starts with authenticity.
Your Vision for 2025
After building a strong foundation in 2024, I’m excited to focus on growth in 2025. My priorities include increasing guest satisfaction, further developing our team, and fostering a culture of excellence. I’m also committed to strengthening community partnerships through volunteering and supporting meaningful causes. Together, we’ll exceed expectations and create lasting success for our guests, team, and community.
Inspiration in Hospitality
My greatest inspiration comes from moments where I can make a genuine impact on a guest’s experience. I’ll never forget a time when a family, staying with us during a difficult chapter, left with tears of gratitude because we made them feel cared for.
I’m also inspired by leaders who lead with empathy and passion. It’s these moments and people that fuel my love for this industry and drive me to keep growing.
Fun and Personal
Outside of work, I cherish time with family and friends, and I’m an animal lover with a Yellow Lab named Bailey and two cats, Simba and Nala. I enjoy cooking—often without a recipe—and my team is always happy to taste-test the leftovers! I’m also a die-hard Eagles and Phillies fan and am currently immersed in wedding planning as I prepare to get married this May.
Jessica’s story is a testament to the power of mentorship, hard work, and authentic leadership. Her journey reminds us that every step—guided by the right support—can lead to incredible growth and success.
