Peer Perspectives
Gabrielle Burton, CHS, Assistant General Manager
Hilton Garden Inn Columbia/Harbison
When Gabrielle Burton walked into the Leadership, Excellence, and Advancement Program (LEAP), she knew she was ready to grow—but she didn’t yet know just how much that growth would shape her path. Today, as the Assistant General Manager at Hilton Garden Inn Columbia/Harbison, Gabrielle reflects on her journey with appreciation, grit, and a drive to lead through service and self-awareness.
“The LEAP program gave me the tools and resources I needed to deal with challenges, ask questions, and gain different perspectives from like-minded individuals,” Gabrielle shares. “It also gave me a greater sense of confidence to never be afraid to ask for guidance.”
That sense of confidence would prove essential as she stepped into her new role—one filled with the fast-paced demands of hotel operations and the hands-on realities of leadership.
“The transition to Hilton Garden Inn Columbia/Harbison has been one of much growth and development—trial by fire, to say the least,” she says with a laugh. “But I’ve learned so much by being part of day-to-day operations. The team here made me feel welcomed from the start, and each person I’ve worked with has shaped me into the leader I aspire to be.”
Gabrielle approaches leadership with the heart of a servant—believing that her success is only possible if she first empowers those around her.
“I empower my staff by giving them the tools and information they need to grow. One thing I’ve learned is that your team reflects your management. A team can only be as good and as driven as their manager. That’s made me look inward and constantly ask how I can be better for them.”
That kind of self-reflection, she notes, is key to long-term leadership.
“Leadership is a continuous process of growth. You have to be willing to get uncomfortable, to stretch, and to make sacrifices. But those moments of hard work are always met with rewarding outcomes—moments that remind you why it’s all worth it.”
Outside the hotel, Gabrielle keeps things light and joyful. She’s a Sims enthusiast, a potato connoisseur (in any form!), and, perhaps most unexpectedly, has the unique talent of making a dolphin noise with her throat. When she’s not working, she loves traveling with her family—some of her favorite memories include cruise adventures and cheering courtside at a Memphis Grizzlies game.
Gabrielle’s journey from LEAP participant to AGM is a testament to what’s possible when determination meets opportunity. Her leadership style, grounded in service, humility, and growth, reflects the best of what hospitality can be. And while her journey is just beginning, it’s clear she’s already making a meaningful impact—one thoughtful interaction, one empowered team member, and one confident step at a time.
