Williamsburg, VA (May 10, 2012) In 1947 the average wage per year was $2,850.00, the average cost of a new car was $1,300.00 and gas was 15 cents a gallon. This was also the year the first airplane broke the sound barrier and supposedly an extraterrestrial spacecraft was found near Roswell, New Mexico.
Meanwhile in Nags Head an event of some significance also took place. The Colonial Inn first opened its doors to guests wanting a room right on the beach.
Now, 65 years later— after undergoing a renovation designed to offer the conveniences of 2012 (wireless internet and flat screen televisions), while maintaining the character of the original building, the Colonial Inn is ready to show off to those loyal guests who have been coming year after year.
To celebrate their refreshed look the owner, Edward “Monty” Blanchard and Newport Hospitality Group (the Inn’s Management Company) held an Anniversary Celebration with food, games, music and fun. Among the party goers was the Inn’s most loyal guest, Roger Humphries, who has been a frequent guest for 58 years. He accompanied his parents on their annual vacation to the Inn as a child and the tradition has continued.
“We’re proud to restore an important piece of Nags Head history and give guest an experience reminiscent of a simpler time,” said Edward “Monty” Blanchard, the Colonial Inn’s owner.
Jim Nye, the Regional Vice President of Newport Hospitality Group, a Williamsburg, VA based hotel management company stated, “The goals of new ownership are consistent with our goals as managers; clean rooms with attributes expected by today’s traveler, superb service but maintain the charm and character of old Nags Head.”
