When we recently gathered in Asheville, North Carolina, for “Together We Rise” NHG’s 2023 Leadership Conference, we were privileged to hear from three of our owners: Andrew Carey, Gib Carey, and Mike Pleninger. During a panel discussion, they reflected on the past, future, and 33 years of achievements. With a combined 50+ years in the hospitality industry, this panel of respected leaders brings a wealth of knowledge.
The initial question directed at the group pertained to NHG’s pipeline and future expansion. Reflecting on the consistent growth over the past 33 years, Gib Carey, a Member of the Board, conveyed his immense enthusiasm about NHG’s journey from its inception. He envisions NHG’s future to be marked by growth that remains ecologically responsible while upholding the unique culture that reinforces NHG. Gib underlined that such progression expansion will enable Newport to live up to its mission of redefining hospitality standards.
Delving into the future of the hospitality industry and the anticipated RevPAR growth for 2024, Andrew Carey, CEO, expressed confidence in a modest rebound for 2024, forecasting a 2-4% uptick. He highlighted two primary factors that will steer this growth. First, Andrew noted the scarce new supply penetrating the markets, which ought to enhance existing inventory. Next, he referenced the prevalent sentiment of “we are not in a recession yet,” which persistently looms over both corporate and vacation travel.
Mike Pleninger, founder and chairman, imparted valuable guidance to the incoming General Managers and Directors of Sales joining NHG. He encouraged all to take a moment to recognize the vast talent present and advised them to learn and prosper mutually. Expanding on this sentiment, Pleninger expressed, “If your heart beats for this business, if you earnestly aim to excel in guest service, and if you love playing the host role, you’re destined to flourish.” He concluded by stressing that the NHG family is primed to foster everyone’s achievements through accessible resources.
When asked about the counsel they would’ve found invaluable during their career paths, Andrew Carey wished someone had told him to “Learn to say no.” Gib Carey contributed, “Only undertake what’s within your capability.” Mike Pleninger wrapped it up, stating, “Always do the right thing.”
Reminiscing over the past 33 years, Gib Carey voiced what instills him with pride. He credits NHG’s principles to the pioneering vision established by Bill and Kip Carey, the original founders, along with Mike Pleninger. This trio set the gold standard for leadership and nurtured the kinship vibe that characterizes NHG presently. They advocated for transparent communication, welcoming everyone to pose questions and sincerely engage with peers. Their enduring legacy is one of united efforts. The path of NHG’s future is deeply indebted to the passion our founders demonstrated from the beginning — a heritage that continues to inspire our pride.
As NHG commemorates its Founder’s Month this September and toasts 33 years of progression and triumph, we pause to cherish our origins and gaze forward to growth.
